715 Scott Avenue SE, Nymore – Home of Vernon Hickerson

This home was built in the 1920s. Warren V. Seybert may have been the first owner. He was a printer and moved from here to New York and then to Park Rapids.

This was the home of Vern and Mary Hickerson for over sixty-five years (1930-1995 or more). He married Mary Sherin Sept. 2, 1927, in Bemidji. As a young woman she worked as a telephone operator in Bemidji. He worked as a bricklayer with his father and brother, then went to work at the First Ford Garage in Bemidji, then at Northern Auto Supply. He started his own business in 1945 at Second Street Body Shop in Bemidji and she worked as the bookkeeper until they retired in 1975. At 70 years old, he took up his hobby of violin making. They traveled to fiddling contests and violin makers’ contests all over the United States and Canada, where he won numerous awards. He also played violins in many contests. He and Mary raised three sons John, Jerald, and Frank in the home.
