Dr. Dexter Whittemore purchased the practice of the late J. T. Bowers and established himself in the old offices in June 1937. Dr. Whittemore was a 1935 graduate of the medical school of the U of M, interned at Anker hospital, St. Paul, and spent a year of advanced study at the same hospital. He practiced in Cloquet for a year and came to Bemidji as a single man. (June 11, 1937) He set up practice in a building that caught fire in January 1939 and was completely destroyed. He then began an association with Dr. Charles Vandersluis and practiced with him until he entered the service in 1942. He continued the practice alone in an office at 510 Beltrami Avenue. In 1940, he and his wife Ednabelle lived at 917 Dewey Ave.
This house was built for them in 1941 and they lived here for about 20 years or so. During 1941, Dr. T. P. Groschupf, Dr. McCann, and Dr. Whittemore began to discuss the need for a medical clinic downtown. They drew up plans and the new clinic opened in 1947. Dr. Deweese joined them. The clinic continued to grow. Dr. Whittemore served as president of the clinic until his retirement in June 30, 1975. They had two children: Dr. Whittemore, Jr., and a daughter Jill. They moved to Birchmont Drive in 1967.
Mr. and Mrs. Ron Gangelhoff and four children were the new residents of the Whittemore home as of January 1967. Mr. Gangelhoff owned a resort at Cass Lake. Ron Gangelhoff reported the theft of gasoline from a parked pickup truck at his home at 1627 Birch Lane on Feb 27 1971.
The home was for sale by Kittleson Realty in summer of 1971.
The home was purchased by Vern Schanilec of Jamestown, North Dakota in the fall of 1971. He became the manager of Johnson’s Corner Drug. A family reunion was hosted by Vern and Faye Shanilec at their home in 1972. He served as president of the Bemidji Chamber of Commerce from 1973-1976. He served on the board of the House of Community, Inc. located at 313 Second street in 1974 which provided housing and care for potential clients of a detox program. Schanilec purchased the Glass Block Drug and luncheonette in February March 1973. He also purchased the Index Stationery Store from Hugh and Lillian McCormick when they retired on January 1, 1975. Vern Schanilec was appointed to the Merit Hearing board by Mayor Doug Peterson in 1976. He moved back to Minto, North Dakota and died there at the age of only 51.
