Felix Barthelemy moved to Bemidji in 1936 to open his own fur shop. At first, he and his brother Richard lived at the Lakeview Hotel. He married Marie Maude Decker June 3, 1940, in Bemidji and they settled in Waville. By 1946, they had moved to this address. He was a charter member of the Lions Club and a member of the Jaycees, where he held a director position on the board. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge and served on the Bemidji City Council in the 1940s. He had a program on KBUN radio from 1942-1950. He was a member of the Bemidji Fish Fry Crew for 32 years and served as its head for several years. He was an avid golfer and won the Bemidji Country Club championship title for many years. He was never at a loss for a joke or a good story.
I remember accompanying my mom each fall and spring to his shop on Beltrami Avenue to either drop off her mouton fur coat for storage or to pick it up. I was so impressed with the beautiful furs. I hate to offend anyone, but I always wanted to own one. It never happened.
Marie Barthelemy came to Bemidji in the 1930s where she taught at Central Elementary School until 1940. After she married Felix, she continued to substitute teach for many years. She was a member of Minnesota Teachers Association and St. Philip’s Catholic Church. She had been an avid sports enthusiast and participated in golf and bowling activities. Two sons, Pete and Bill; four daughters, Nanette, Vicki, Marie, and Elizabeth.
In March 1967, Bill Barthelemy reported that the right front window of his car had been broken by a snowball. In October of 1967, his car was damaged by an unknown driver while it was parked in the alley behind the Bemi-Tonka Trading Post at 203 3rd St. Damage amounted to $50.
Vicki Barthelemy and Joan Hubbard, students at Alexandria Technical College attended the Post Secondary Division National Leadership Conference of the Distributive Clubs of America. (DECA) in Houston, Texas, held on April 28-30, 1968. The girls were among 45 Minnesota students chosen to attend the conference.
Cars driven by Linda Topping, Harlan Johnson and Marie Barthelemy collided at the corner of the 9th and Beltrami on Oct 18, 1971. The Barthelemy car was a total loss.
