The house was built about 1910. Karen Rood, widow of Edward Rood, and her son, Ludvig Rood, who was a traveling salesman, were living here in 1916-1917.
Mrs. John Claffy was here in 1918.
Robert Laughlin Given moved here from Lake Boulevard and were living here from 1920 to 1931. Robert was the president of Given Hardware in 1931.
Robert Deuser and wife Cecelia were renting a home at 1321 Bemidji Avenue in 1930 but had moved to this house by 1934. Cecelia died Feb 4, 1935. Robert Deuser and his son Worrell lived here in 1939. Mr. Deuser then married Nova Hand on Dec. 26, 1944 to at St. Philip’s Catholic Church. He was a long resident of Bemidji, In 1934 he became associated with Leonard and Cyril Dickinson where he managed the sales department for five years. The Dickinsons then sold their interests in the lumber yard to Standard Lumber Co. and Deuser remained manager until his retirement in 1968. At the time of his death in 1977, Mr. Deuser was an appraiser and compliance inspector for the Veterans Administration which he had been doing since 1946.
Mr. Deuser was very active within the Bemidji community, having memberships in the following organization: Elks Lodge, American Legion, which he was a board member, local and national Association of Retired Persons, Beltrami County Historical Society, Bemidji Civic and Commerce Association, which he was also an officer, and Bemidji Town and Country Club where he served as a board member.
He was also a past member of the general advisory committee of the Bemidji AVTI, and while being member of the Rotary Club served as president.
Mr. Deuser was active in St. Philip’s Catholic Church, serving as trustee and participating in the Knights of Columbus.
Nova Deuser was born in Bemidji. She attended elementary school in Shotley and Saum, Minn. In 1930, she moved to Bemidji. She worked for the Hartz grocery store for seven years, J.C. Penney’s, and was a florist at Francis Allen Flowers on and off for 15 years. She was a member of St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, Bemidji Women’s Garden Club, Hospital Auxiliary and she was a Girl Scout leader of two troops for several years. I remember her as a lively member of the Does organization of Bemidji Elks Club. My mom often spoke well of Nova. I liked her unique name! In 1980, Nova married Tom Roberts of Bemidji.
Robt Young and Hollie Young lived here from at least 1982-1998. He was president of Young and Davis Drywall Inc.
The house was updated in 1998. It changed owners in 2005, 2008, and in 2013. It is still a well-kept private home.
