Martin Papp moved to Bemidji when he was 16 years old. He married Martha Coultas on October 21, 1940. Martha was raised and lived just a block from here at 915 12th Street. Martin and Martha had two sons, Martin and Andrew, and three daughters, Mary Ann, Marlyce, and Judy Kay. When he was 24, he was a bartender for Clifford and Helen Skoog. Martin served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He worked on the Alaska-Canadian Highway. He also did logging, worked for the Coke Company in Bemidji for several years, and was employed by Bemidji State University. Martin enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, reading, gardening and camping. In 1976, he applied for a building permit to add onto this house. Martha died in 1995. Martin Papp, Sr. died August 5, 2005 at his home.
Interestingly, Martha grew up a block away on 12th Street. Her brother Marvin Coultas owned a home at 1020 12th Street in the 1970s which is currently owned by her son Andrew Papp.
